An open letter to the previous generation.

Dear Boomers and Gen X,

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that you do not take us seriously. We protest, we fight, we petition, we boycott for our planet’s safety and our own. We scream at you to make a change, to do the right thing. And yet, all you can manage to do is deny reality, and continue counting your money. Climate Change is real, bottomline. So we keep fighting. We don’t want you to ask if our efforts are for a school project. We don’t want you to ask if we are collecting community service hours. We aren’t. We are in the midst of a life or death situation. We have 11 years to determine which it will be.

To the few of you who are aware of the legitimacy of Global Warming, don’t you dare tell us that it is up to our generation to fix this climate change and plastic crisis. No. Your generation contributed to the devastation our planet is facing. You can’t pin the responsibility on us now that you’ve realized cleaning up this mess is a greater task than you imagined. Not when some of you still have half a lifetime to live.

And to those of you who think we are insignificant and incapable, we don’t want you to sit there and suggest that we buy our parents reusable bags for Christmas. We don’t want you to tell us to quiet down and let the “grown-ups” talk. We don’t want you to tell us that we don’t know how the world really works. Don’t underestimate us. We have done our research. We have done our part.

It is time for you to do yours.

-Gen Z
